Oct 11th was another early day as we traveled from Durango to Mesa Verde National Park.

Seeing this sign was exciting for Terri. She has been trying to get Denny to Mesa Verde for years. It has lots of fond childhood memories for her.

The first stop of the day was the necessary stop at the Visitor's Center, but not for visiting.

A few steps from the center was this strange looking mountain.

Point Lookout.

We took the top loop drive, which is 6 miles. Don't let the mileage fool you. It takes time to stop and enjoy the scenery.

Our first cliff dwelling was the Square Tower House.

This dwelling has 8 kivas (ground pits used for ceremonial purposes) and 60 rooms.

The park rangers offer special tours to climb down into the dwellings for the not so weak at heart & able bodied persons (which would not be us).

Our trusty bus and driver. He lives just outside Denver and only drives tours in Colorado. What a gem!

This is a pit house. We are not clear on the differences between a kiva and a pit house.

Also a pit house.
